Microsoft Office Word 2008 Insert Image Error

Microsoft Office Word 2008 has a nasty habit of popping up this error when trying to insert an image into a Word document:
The application cannot open this file. This file is an unsupported graphic format or may be damaged. Try opening the graphic in another application.
You may have noticed that it only sometimes happens, and that you can even insert the same image into one doc but not into another. Think you’re losing your mind? Fear not! Try closing the “Styles” section of the “Formatting Palette” and the error should go away.
